Step-by-step help with passport renewals.

Passport Renewal Assistance, Step by Step

Renewals are the simplest passport path, and also the easiest to get slightly wrong. One rejected photo can cost weeks you may not have.

Quick answer

How does passport renewal assistance work?

You can usually renew by mail if your most recent passport is undamaged, was issued when you were 16 or older, was issued within the last 15 years, and is in your current name or you have legal documentation of the change.

  • Eligibility check
  • Photo review
  • Renewal timing plan

Renewal or new application?

If any renewal condition is not met, you are generally treated as a first-time applicant and must apply in person with citizenship evidence.

  • Damaged or water-affected passport: not eligible for standard renewal
  • Issued before age 16: not eligible
  • Lost or stolen: replacement path, not renewal

How early should you renew?

Many destinations require six months of validity beyond your travel dates, and some airlines enforce it at check-in. Renewing nine to twelve months before expiration avoids the entire problem.

XpressPass is a private passport assistance service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the U.S. Department of State or any other government agency. Government passport fees are separate from XpressPass service fees. Passport issuance decisions are made solely by the U.S. government.
